Letter opener machines have two speeds: 1. Operating speed, and 2. Duty cycle. Operating speed refers to the maximum speed per hour a letter opener's motor can run. The duty cycle is the recommended amount of envelopes a letter opener should open per day or hour.
When a letter opener has an operating speed of 7,500 envelopes per hour, this doesn't mean you should open 60,000 envelopes in an 8-hour shift. It means that you can open a stack of 625 envelopes in 5 minutes. Overworking an envelope opener will damage it or reduce its efficiency. Always refer to the duty cycle rate to determine the letter opener's daily maximum usage. To determine the duty cycle of a letter opener check the unit's instruction manual, or call an authorized sales associate.
