uAttend CB1000 Employee Time ClockIn the contemporary electronic culture we live in people bank online, shop online, learn online, they even date and marry online. So isn’t it only natural that people should clock in to work online too? Web-based time keeping is the brave new world offered by the uAttend CB1000 time management system.

The uAttend CB1000 Employee Time Clock System is a web based time clock that allows employees to clock in for work using a computer, smart phone, tablet or other web browsing device.  For the employees who still like to go old school, they can still use the time clock machine to punch in/out. The uAttend CB1000 time clock system is a handy time management solution for companies that employee tele-commuters, an outside sales team, multiple locations, or even an organization housed in a very large building that makes using a central time clock impractical.

The uAttend CB1000 Employee Time Clock System has several features that make it preferable to a traditional time clock, or a time management system that is tethered to a single computer or specific client based software. The uAttend CB1000 uses the new cloud computing technology. This means that along with employees being able to clock in and out from almost anywhere the business owners, human resource managers, or payroll specialists also have the flexibility of doing time and attendance anywhere and at anytime.  All the time management data from each source feeds into a central cloud system where it is instantly aggregated for easy online editing and reconciliation.

This is a video demo of the uAttend CB1000:

Human resource managers and payroll managers who are slowly but surely trying to free themselves of cumbersome and inefficient paper punch card systems, or convoluted software packages will appreciate the ease and simplicity offered by the uAttend CB1000 time management system.   The uAttend CB1000 can handle an unlimited number of employees, so there is no need to pay extra for additional licenses.

The convenience of this web-based time keeping system is its biggest selling point. Authorized personnel are able to login to the website from any internet access location to view hours, run payroll reports, make necessary changes and manage the system. They’ll also appreciate the ease they can export the data to an external payroll company or to their organizations internal payroll system.

A possible turn off for some consumers will be the need to sign up for a membership to use the uAttend CB1000, and other uAttend products. The upside is that users don’t need to sign any long-term contracts. And according to uAttend, the total cost of ownership for a CB1000 is typically 20 – 40% less than the total cost of ownership for a comparable time clock over the course of three years. So you may be able to recoup membership costs over that time. Their lifetime warranty also offers full replacement of any equipment that’s damaged.

You can get the uAttend CB1000 time clock hardware you’ll need to get started at Office Zone. You can find our entire selection of employee time clocks here.

Martin Yale 1217A Paper Folder Review

Posted by: James on August 3rd, 2011

Martin Yale 1217A Folding MachinePaper folding machines, like the Martin Yale 1217A are still an indispensable piece of office equipment. Even in our so-called “paperless” society, millions of sheets of paper are mailed out daily by banks, government agencies, schools, publishers and other organizations.  And since no one wants to be the one to fold thousands of sheets of paper by hand, the Martin Yale 1217A paper folder offers a fine alternative to labor wasting tasks.

The Martin Yale 1217A is a medium volume paper folding machine. But don’t let the word “medium” fool you. This paper folder is very capable of folding over 10,000 sheets of 90-pound bond paper per hour, using a friction roller and conveyor system to feed the papers through. The Martin Yale 1217A has enough fold versatility to meet most business fold jobs. It has an adjustable fold range of 2″ to 11 1/2″ on the 1st fold and 1 1/2″ to 5 3/4″ on the 2nd. This enables the user to customize the paper folder to execute letter folds, double parallel folds, single folds, z-folds, french folds, and baronial folds with ease.

The paper folder is made Martin Yale Industries, a US manufacturer of office and mailroom equipment. According to their website they design their equipment to make work life more productive and secure.  Founded in 1940, Martin Yale has a 68-year track record of designing, engineering, and manufacturing quality products for the office. They are also known for having a helpful customer service department when customers have questions or need help.

This is a video demo of the Martin Yale 1217A:

The Martin Yale 1217A paper folder is very easy to use. It is a manual paper folder, so the user will need to adjust the paper folder’s settings to the desired fold style. The stack of documents that need to be folded are then placed on to the feeder section located on the top left of the machine. Once the machine is turned on then machine does the rest of the work, sparing the user the unpleasantness of paper cuts and cramped fingers.  The machine stacks and fans the folded documents on to the receiving tray for retrieval.

The affordability of the Martin Yale 1217A will make it an attractive option for schools, churches, community banks and other organizations looking for a good deal and a reliable paper folding machine. The paper capacity of this paper folder can accommodate a paper size range of 3 1/2″ x 4″ to 11 3/4″ x 18″. A downside of this, or any other friction-operated paper folder for that matter, is that it cannot be used to fold glossy paper. If you’re in a business that uses a lot of slick, shiny paper then you’d be better off with a suction-operated paper folder. For any other type of paper, this paper folder will get the job done for you. Proper maintenance of the Martin Yale 1217A paper folding machine will ensure that the user will get years of use.

You can get the best price on a Martin Yale 1217A paper folder, or most of the Martin Yale line of office equipment at Office Zone. You can find our entire selection of paper folding machines here.

Intelli-Lam IL300 Pouch Laminating Machine Review

Posted by: James on July 26th, 2011

Intelli-Lam IL300 Pouch Laminating MachineIf you laminate photos, business cards, signs and other material, you’re going to need a reliable and durable laminating machine. One key quality you will want in your laminator is a well-built metal design. Few laminators in the $100 offer this feature. One laminator that provides excellent build quality along with a great price is the Intelli-Lam IL300 pouch laminating machine. This is my review.

To begin with, I have personally used a variety of different Intelli-Lam pouch laminators, which includes the IL300. Few laminators, including Akiles, Banner American, Fellowes an GBC come close to offering the amount of features you get with Intelli-Lam for the price. Intelli-Zone, the manufacturer of Intelli-Lam, also makes Intelli-Bind, Intelli-Fold and Intelli-Shred office machines.

Upon first glance, the IL300 looks like a solid piece of equipment. Looks aren’t everything though, so I decided to pick it up and get a feel for the machine. The IL300 has some heft to it. This is due in part to the fact that a good portion of the materials used in the IL300’s construction are metal. Even the housing is metal. It reminded me a lot of the Akiles ProLam series of laminators.

Another important feature you want in a good office laminator is multiple rollers. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Intelli-Lam IL300 has 4 rollers. These rollers help evenly distribute pressure and heat for excellent results. Have you ever had to re-feed a pouch through a laminator because you didn’t get good results the first time? This is not the case with the IL300. Results look great the first time.

Using the laminator is easy. Simply plug it in and turn it on. It about 10 minutes or so the laminator is completely warmed up and ready to go. A green indicator light will let you know when it is ready to be used.

An adjustable temperature dial makes it easy for even the biggest laminating enthusiast to get great results. Unlike most laminators in the $100 range (the IL300 at the time of this article is $102), the IL300 can be used with film as thick as 10 mils!

In case you’re not familiar with laminating pouches, they come in 3, 5, 7 and 10 mil thicknesses. A mil is a thousandth of an inch (0.001″). The higher the mil thickness, the thicker the pouch. Most $100 laminators cannot handle anything thicker than 5 mils.

Another huge plus on the IL300 is the reverse switch. In the even that you feed a pouch in crooked, or a jam occurs, you can flip the motor into reverse and back the pouch back out. If for any reason the reverse motor cannot release the jam, four screws can easily be removed on the cover to allow easy access to the inner components.

One concern I have heard from customers is that the power light is on all the time. There is no need to be alarmed. When the laminator is plugged in, an LED does light up, but the heat and motor are off. It is essentially in standby mode until you flip the laminator switch to “on.”

The motor in the IL300 is so quiet barely even notice it is on. This is ideal for office laminating situations. A person can easily use this laminator on their desk without annoying fellow employees.

This laminator is affordable enough for home use, yet durable enough for office use. I see no reason why you cannot use this laminator all day long. It is a solid piece of machinery and I had a great experience using it.

Film Supplies: 3, 5, 7, and 10 Mil Laminating Sheets / Pouches

Posted by: James on July 7th, 2011

Laminating Sheets & PouchesIf you own, run or use a pouch laminating machine on a regular basis, you’re probably well aware of the fact that these machines require film to run properly. This film is often referred to as laminating sheets or pouches (found here). So which type of laminating pouch should you use with your machine? I will cover some basic questions that should set you on the right path.

To begin with, laminating sheets come in a variety of different shapes and thicknesses. The thickness of a pouch is referred to as a mil. A mil is a thousandth of an inch or 0.001″.  The higher the mil, the thicker the pouch. The thicker the pouch, the more stability and rigidity the pouch has.

Before you settle on any given mil thickness of pouch, be sure you are familiar with your pouch laminator’s limitations. Most pouch laminators can handle 3 and 5 mil pouches. Seven and 10 mil pouches are thicker and thus require a laminator capable of handling the additional glue and material. I would estimate about 35% of pouch laminators can handle a 10 mil pouch.

Which mil thickness is most popular? I get this question all the time. People want something that looks good, works with their laminator and gets the “results” they are looking for. I have found in my own personal experience that a 5 mil pouch is the most popular thickness available.

A 5 mil thickness is universally accepted by most laminators, can still be used to coat and protect photos, documents, cards and more. A 5 mil pouch has a nice blend of flexibility while maintaining enough stability not to be “floppy.”

While laminating sheets and pouches are available in several different finishes, a clear glossy finish is by far the most popular style of pouch available. The glossy finish reflects light and has a slick texture and feel to it. Over 90% of available pouches are glossy.

At Office Zone we offer 3,5, 7 and 10 mil pouches in a variety of sizes. These sizes are as follows:

Standard-Size Glossy Laminating Pouches (found here)

  • 2 1/4″ x 3 3/4″  (Business Card)
  • 2 1/8″ x 3 3/8″ (Credit Card)
  • 2 3/8″ x 3 5/8″ (Driver’s License)
  • 2 5/16″ x 3 1/4″ (IBM)
  • 2 1/2″ x 3 7/8″ (Key Card)
  • 2 5/8″ x 3 7/8″ (Military)
  • 2 1/2″ x 3 5/8″ (School Card)
  • 2 15/16″ x 4 1/8″ (Jumbo)
  • 2 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ (Luggage Tag w/o Slot)
  • 2 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ (Luggage Tag w/ Slot)
  • 3 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ (Index Card)
  • 3 15/16″ x 5 11/16″ (Circulation Card)
  • 3 9/16″ x 5 5/16″ (Post Card)
  • 3 15/16″ x 6 7/8″ (Extra Circulation)
  • 4″ x 6″

Large-Size Glossy Laminating Pouches (found here)

  • 6″ x 9″ Laminating Sheets
  • 9″ x 11 ½” Laminating Sheets
  • 9″ x 14 ½” Laminating Sheets
  • 12″ x 18″ Laminating Sheets

When picking a size of pouch, be sure your laminator can properly accommodate the size. I have seen people purchase a 12″ pouch for their 12″ laminator. Because there is so little room for error, jams are frequent. When a pouch is fed into a laminator, any deviance in the alignment, even by 1/16″ of an inch, will result in increased deviation as the lamination film makes its way through the machine.

If for any reason a jam does occur, don’t try to fish the laminating film out using scissors, a knife or other sharp objects. This can result in damaged silicon rollers which will affect our laminating results. If you have a serious jam, please feel free to contact our Service Department at 1-800-543-5454 x129 for advice on fixing the problem.

How to Use a Comb Binding Machine

Posted by: James on June 29th, 2011

Comb Binding MachinesComb binding continues to be one of the most popular book binding formats used today. There are many reasons for this. Let me list off just a few of those reasons:

Price –  Comb binding supplies are THE cheapest available today. You can buy a box 100 1/4″ diameter supplies for just a few dollars. Even wire and coil can’t compete with that rate. Not only are the supplies inexpensive, but the machines are affordable as well. You can find our comb binding machines here and comb binding supplies here.

Look – Many people like the look of comb binding. It is very unique and has been used for decades, developing a certain appeal to many people.

Availability – Comb binding elements are one of the most available supplies available. You can find the online, in brick & mortar stores and much more.

– Comb binding supplies come in a wide range of color, including red, green, blue, brown, black, clear, white and much more.

Adding / Removing – Comb binding elements are extremely easy to re-open, allowing you to easily add and remove pages.

Recycling – Comb binding supplies can be re-used over and  over again, making it possible to bind multiple books for years using the same element.

Comb binding is commonly used to bind booklets, reports, presentations and other documents. The two most common types of comb binding machines are electric and manual comb binders. Manual comb binders are generally used for low to medium-volume binding and electric machines are used for medium to high-volume binding.

So how do you actually use a comb binding machine? This guide will show you how to comb bind a booklet in 8 easy steps.

How to Use a Comb Binding Machine

Step 1. Set up the comb binding machine prior to use. This may involve adjusting the margin depth (how far the holes are punched in the paper), side margin guides (where the holes punch in the paper left to right) and the selectable punching pins (If equipment, will allow you to disable specific holes). There isn’t usually too much involved in setting up the comb binding machine.

Adjust Comb Binding Machine

Step 2.
Take the paper you plan on punching and gather it into a stack. This is a personal preference, but I like to keep the cover and the back cover separate.

Clear Cover / Binding Covers

Step 3. Take about 10-20 sheets (depending on your machine’s punching capacity) and begin punching each stack of paper. If using a manual punch, pull the punching arm. If using an electric punch, press the punching button or foot pedal. This process usually only takes a few seconds. Repeat this process until all the paper has been punched.

Comb Punch Paper

Step 4. Take all your paper and jog it together, aligning the edges. This can be done manually by tapping the paper on a table or by using an electric paper jogger (found here). This will make it easier to insert the combs.

Comb Align Paper

Step 5. Place the comb element you will be using on the machine’s comb opener. Open the comb by pulling or pushing the comb opening lever. Most electric comb binding machines still have a manual comb opener.

Open Combs / Comb Opener

Step 6. Once the comb is open, insert the open fingers of the comb through the punched paper. Be sure you get all 19 fingers through each of the 19 punched holes. Also be sure the fingers make it all the way through the holes. It is easy to accidentally mist a few pages.

Insert Combs Through Comb Punched Holes

Step 7. Release the comb opener, allowing the comb’s fingers to naturally recoil back into their natural position.

Close Comb / Comb Binding

Step 8. You have just finished comb binding your first book. You are now ready to repeat the process (if needed).

Finished Comb Binding

This is where you can find everything you need to start comb binding:

So there you have it! While it may seem a little intimidating at first, comb binding books is actually pretty easy. If you still have questions, please feel free to contact one of our comb binding specialists by calling 1-800-543-5454.

Intelli-Fold DE-112AF Automated Paper Folding Machine Review

Posted by: James on June 29th, 2011

Intelli-Fold DE-112AF Paper Folding MachineHow many times have you cut your finger trying to manually fold paper? It is no surprise that manually folding paper is at the top of many people’s “most annoying job” list. It is time consuming, results often appear poor and it is extremely inefficient. If you want to improve your folding operations, improve the professional look of the folding job and save money, you need to take a look at the Intelli-Fold DE-112AF paper folding machine from Intelli-Zone. I have used this machine and this is my own review.

The Intelli-Fold line of paper folding machines have quickly become the most popular line we offer. Machines range from desktop machines, like the Intelli-Fold IF300, up to high-end pharmaceutical folding machines like the Intelli-Fold DF-304VC. One of the biggest selling points of Intelli-Fold machines is the incredible price to value ration. It’s tough to find a machine, with the same features and quality, at the same low price.

The Intelli-Fold DE-112AF is currently one of the top selling Intelli-Fold machines available. It is a higher-quality version of the popular Dynafold DE-112AF as it is made in the original Dynafold factory and features a powered exit conveyor. It is a manual setup machine with electric-powered automated feeding and folding. Initial setup generally takes 1-5 minutes, depending on the operator. I’ll explain.

This particular folding machine utilizes two folding plates. Each of these two plates need to be individually set up and adjusted. A combination of the two plates allows you to create letter folds, zig-zag folds, single folds, half accordion folds, gate folds, double parallel folds and more. Sorry about the long list, but I want to get across just how much it can do. Because the plates are manually adjusted, custom folds are extremely easy to create on this machine.

The Intelli-Fold DE-112AF features a drop-in style feed tray. No pre-fanning of the paper is required. Simply take your jogged stack of paper (up to 500 sheets), and place them in the tray. Once turned on, the DE-112AF will continue peeling 1 sheet off the stack at a time until the entire stack has been folded. A sensor in the feed tray lets the machine know when all the paper has been folded, automatically turning off the machine. This helps prevent premature motor wear.

Regarding the motor, it is fast. It folds paper at speeds of up to 6,000 sheets per hour. It maintains a monthly duty cycle of about 12,000 folds per month.

The Intelli-Fold DE-112AF is designed to be used with paper ranging in sizes from 3.5″ x 5″ (89mm x 127mm) up to to 8.5″ x 14″ (216mm x 356mm). That means it will handle letter size paper, legal size paper and smaller. Paper thickness ranges from 16# up to 24# paper.

The DE-112AF has a powered exit tray, which is nice for keeping paper in alphanumerical order. Few machines in this price range come with the convenience of a powered conveyor. If you don’t need to keep your paper organized, you may want to consider using the Intelli-Fold DE-102AF (found here), which is exactly the same as the DE-112AF, but without a conveyor.

The build quality on the DE-112AF is excellent and far exceeds the quality of comparable paper folding machines. It is designed for daily use and is excellent for use in schools, churches, copy shops and other businesses. I give this machine a solid 5 out of 5.

You can find the Intelli-Fold DE-112AF paper folding machine here and our entire selection of Intelli-Fold paper folders here. You can find our entire selection of paper folding machines here.

Office Paper Shredder Maintenance Tips & Advice

Posted by: James on June 23rd, 2011

Paper Shredder MaintenanceIf you use a paper shredder in the office, chances are pretty good that you rely on it and need it to stay healthy.  Many people don’t realize that office equipment requires special treatment. Paper shredders are very similar to cars in that there they have certain limits and require regular maintenance to keep up optimal operation. Here are a few tips on how you can keep your shredder purring for years.

To begin with, you need to be aware that paper shredders are not indestructible machines. They have limits, albeit those limits vary greatly depending on the make and model. I recommend that you first familiarize yourself with the shredder. Break out the owner’s manual and learn how much paper it can shred, what the bin capacity is, etc. If you can’t find your shredder’s manual, contact our Service Department at 1-800-543-5454 x129 and see if you can get a new one faxed or e-mailed to you.

Having used paper shredders for years myself, I have developed an understanding on the most important things you can do to maximize the life of your shredder. Here are the most important things to keep in mind.

Paper Shredder OilShredder Oil
– Paper shredders, especially those of the cross cut variety, have a lot of moving parts that generate dulling and heat generating friction. A special oil has been manufactured that keeps things lubricated and running smooth. You can find our shredder oil here. Keep in mind that a can of WD-40 or vegetable oil will not cut it. WD-40 is too lightweight and vegetable oil…are you kidding me? This is a machine, not a French fry cooker.

Shredder Bags
– As a paper shredder cuts paper, it begins to create a lot of dust. While not all shredders have the luxury of a dust-proof gearhouse, using the proper size of shred bag can help cut down on dust and particles from winding back up into critical shredder components. Proper shredder bags (found here) also make bag changes cleaner, faster and easier. While garbage bag may cut it, it usually leaves gaps and limits the maximum bin capacity.

Staples and Paper Clips – While some paper shredders feature specially hardened cutting blades and shafts, many shredders can become damaged when a paper clip is run through. As a good habit, I personally like removing staples and paperclips (especially paper clips) prier to shredding paper.

Motor Temperature
– Most home office and deskside paper shredders require a cooldown period. The general rule is 30 minutes use and 30 minutes cooldown. While many shredders will automatically shut off when they become too hot, this isn’t always the case. Don’t overwork your shredder. I recommend no more than 30 minutes use. If you have a continuous-duty shredder with a thermally protected motor, use it all you want. Thermally protected shredders are designed to be run all day long.

Capacity – All paper shredders, regardless of make, model or brand, have a maximum sheet capacity. While many modern shredders have load detectors that will back paper out if too much is fed through, not all shredders have this luxury. Some shredders, lacking load detection, will simply jam and break down. This can cause permanent damage to motors and gears. Make sure you know if your shredder has load detection, and if not, know how many sheets it can handle.

I hope these tips help you out. If your shredder has already failed and is no longer working, it may simply need a replacement gear or belt. Feel free to contact our Service Department at 1-800-543-5454 x129 (or by filling out this form) to see if your shredder can be repaired. We are official dealers for Dahle, Destroyit, Fellowes, Formax, GBC, Kobra, Intelli-Shred, HSM, Intimus and Martin Yale.

If your shredder is irreversibly damaged, you can find our entire selection of brand new paper shredders here. If you aren’t sure what type of shredder to order, please feel free to call and speak with one of our paper shredder specialists at 1-800-543-5454.

MBM Destroyit 3104 Cross Cut Office Paper Shredder Review

Posted by: James on June 23rd, 2011

Destroyit 3104 Cross Cut Paper Shredder with Auto OilerWhen shopping around for a paper shredder, you probably want the best possible machine for your money. Right? A good solid office shredder should be durable, feature a good shredding capacity and should be able to be used throughout the day without overheating. One shredder that hits all these points and much more is the MBM Destroyit 3104 Level 3 cross cut paper shredder. This is a review.

I would like to start off by going over why a level 3 shredder is so desirable for an office. A security level, in the paper shredder industry, defines how small and secure the cut is. A level 3 particle size is a nice blend of capacity, convenience and security. Level 3 is by far the most common and popular cross cut size for offices. In the case of the 3104 cross cut, it takes paper and turns it into a 3/16″ x 1 1/2″ (4 x 40 mm) particle. Unless you’re shredding top secret documents or classified information, this should be more than enough for your business.

The MBM Destroyit 3104 features a solid build quality. You should be aware that it is both German built and German engineered. Few paper non-Destroyit shredders enjoy the quality that you find in German paper shredders. Let me go over just a few of the “quality” mechanical components you will find in the 3104.

Hardened Cutting Shafts – Many shredders feature standard steel cutting shafts. These “cheaper” shafts get nicked and suffer minor damage when the straggling staple or paper clip makes its way through. The Destroyit 3104 has hardened cutting shafts that can easily handle staples, paper clips, credit cards and CDs. As you might imagine, it also handles paper quite nicely as well.

Chain Drive
– A chain drive delivers continuous unrestricted power to the cutting shafts. This results in reliable performance. This also means that you won’t have to worry about stripped-out nylon gears either. The chain drive system ensures durability and longevity.

Dust-Proof Gearbox Housing – As you might imagine, paper shredders create a lot of paper dust. This dust can quickly make its way into gears and other sensitive shredder components. The dust-proof gearbox on the 3104 keeps the gears running nice and clean.

Thermally Protected Motor
– Many paper shredders overheat and require a cooldown period. This is not the case with the Destroyit 3104. It uses a specially designed motor that is thermally protected, allowing it to be used continuously without overheating.

12″ Opening – A wide 12″ opening easily accepts letter-size paper, envelopes, computer forms paper, jumbled stacks of paper and much more. The Destroyit 3104’s 12″ opening allows for a lot of play and is very forgiving.

Transparent Safety Shield
– The transparent safety shield used on the Destroyit 3104 ensures that only intended materials are being shredded. The Destroyit 3104 is easily one of the safest paper shredders currently on the market.

Wooden Cabinet – Paper shredder can be noisy. A sound-absorbing wood cabinet helps bring down decibel levels and makes in-office paper shredding a far more tolerable experience.

Casters – Included casters make the Destroyit 3104 easy to move around from one location to another.

This is a brief video from MBM on the Destroyit 3104:

Did I mention that this is a high quality shredder? It can easily be placed in a centralized office location for use by multiple people. It also features an extremely easy to use control interface. Sensors and indicator lights let you know what’s going on at all times, keeping you in control of the situation.

I highly recommend this paper shredder. If you have an office and need a reliable paper shredder that will last for years, this is the one you need.

Top 10 Best Office Paper Shredders 2011

Posted by: James on June 22nd, 2011

Formax FD 8650CC AutoOiler Office Paper ShredderAre you in the market for a new paper shredder? Perhaps you need a model because last year’s model broke down or burnt out. Regardless of the reason you’re looking for a paper shredder, chances pretty good you want something that will hold up. With literally hundreds of different models floating around, it is probably tough to sift through the clutter and find a shredder that fits your bill. I have compiled this list of highly reliable office paper shredders.

Before I provide you with my list of best office paper shredders 2011, let me familiarize you with the “best” paper shredder manufacturers available. These brands may not be as familiar to you as many of them are not commonly found in your local department store. These shredders are, however, very well known among the government and military.

Top Paper Shredder Brands

Do these brands sound familiar? These brands compile the best office paper shredders modern technology has to offer. They have proven track records, have been around for years and to be honest, our Customer Service Reps love them because the don’t have to deal with after-sale issues.

So what do I consider to be a good shredder? I have a few requirements:

  • To begin with, a paper shredder must have a continuous-duty motor. You shouldn’t have to wait around for a shredder to cool down, especially in an office.
  • An office shredder needs to have a nice shredding capacity. You don’t want to have to wait around a paper shredder like water cooler, waiting for a few sheets to finish shredding before you insert the next 5-6 sheets. You need something that allows you to shred at least 15+ sheets at a time. Stay away from wimpy shredders.
  • An office shredder needs to have a nice bin size. I recommend at least a 15 gallon bin or larger. If you can afford it, go with a shredder that has a 30 gallon bin or larger. Larger bins mean less bag changes and time saved for you!
  • Get a shredder with a nice feed opening. I personally like at least 10″ or wider for office use. A wider opening will be able to handle disorganized stacks of paper better and will also be better able to handle computer forms. Some higher-end departmental shredders have openings as wide as 16″!

So here you go, my list of the top 10 best office paper shredder for 2011. Shredders are arranged alphabetically.

  1. Dahle 20614EC Heavy Duty Shredder
  2. Dahle 30414 Cross Cut Paper Shredder
  3. Dahle 20800EC Office Paper Shredder
  4. Formax FD 8500 Office Shredder
  5. Formax FD 8650CC AutoOiler Office Paper Shredder

So there you have it! The top 10 office paper shredders (designed for departmental use) for the year 2011. These 10 shredders are all from the top 4 paper shredder brands available today. I wish I could have added a few more shredders, but wanted to keep the list around 10. All four of these brands offer other models that may be better suited for smaller businesses.

Of these shredders, 70% of them are German engineered and German built. I have personally found that German paper shredders tend to hold up better than shredders made in “other” countries. This isn’t always the case, but is a good rule of thumb.

MBM Destroyit 4002 Centralized Office Paper Shredder Review

Posted by: James on June 22nd, 2011

MBM Destroyit 4002 Centralized Office ShredderMost offices are busy, bustling places with people shuffling paper from one place to another. In the midst of this chaos, it is easy for paper to become improperly discarded. According to Federal law (FACTA / HIPAA), client, patient and customer information must be shredded when no longer needed. One great way for an office to stay on top of things, and stay compliant, is by using the MBM Destroyit 4002 centralized office shredder. This is a review.

Destroyit (by IDEAL) is distributed in the United States by MBM Corporation. These shredders are German engineered and German built, many say to perfection. Few shredders even comes close in quality or durability. Even Fellowes is now private labeling many Destroyit shredders for their own office line.

The Destroyit 4002 has quickly become a classic and has even developed a cult-like following among paper shredder enthusiasts.  This shredder is available in 3 flavors, depending on your personal preference and office needs. This includes a Level 2 strip cut, Level 3 cross cut and Level 4 cross cut. While the shredder blades vary in these different variations, the rest of the shredder remains the same.

About 2 years ago Destroyit implemented a new “Easy Switch” button not to be confused with Staples’ “Easy Button.” This switch is big, round and EXTREMELY easy to use. You push it forward, it turns green and puts the shredder in “automated mode,” which turns the shredder on as paper is detected. Tilt the switch forward again and the shredder turns off. Tilt the switch back and it goes into reverse.

A series of back-lit symbols let you know exactly what is going on with the Destroyit 4002. A capacity gauge lets you know exactly how hard this shredder is working. This is especially nice because you don’t have to count the sheets you are shredding to determine if you are hitting the maximum capacity. This shredder is overall a gem to use.

This is a brief demo of the Destroyit 4002 paper shredder from MBM:

Have you ever used a paper shredder and though you had just turned on a lawn mower? Some shredders are just plain loud. Destroyit has put a lot of effort into making this shredder quiet. This is done in large part to the use of noise-absorbing materials, including a heavy-duty wooden cabinet.

The Destroyit 4002 is designed to be used in an office by multiple people throughout the day. The hardened steel cutting shafts and the thermally protected continuous duty motor keep chomping through paper without overheating or suffering any ill effects. Simply put, this shredder is designed to be used all the time.

Bag changes on this shredder are easy. To begin with, this shredder will let you know when it is full. When it is full, a cabinet door can be opened up, allowing access to the shred bin. The shred bin holds a whopping 44 gallons of paper. Consider the fact that most cars hold 15-30 gallons of fuel. This shredder holds a lot of paper which means a lot fewer bag changes for you.

The Destroyit 4002 is a customer favorite. It has a great track record. It features a sleek design that blends in with just about any office. Let’s see, what else can I say? I recommend this shredder for use in any office. You will probably even have fun using it.
