Modern businesses have many needs and often need tools that support their often versatile and constantly changing working conditions. For this reason, Formax has made the FD 8704CC multimedia paper shredder (found here). This shredder is designed from the ground up to keep up with the needs of modern businesses and help them stay on top of the curve, especially when it comes to data and information destruction. I would like to share a few of these features with you in this article.
While paper destruction and HIPAA / FACTA compliance is extremely important, not all data and sensitive information is stored on paper. Many businesses use optical or magnetic media to store patient and customer records, important plans, research and much more. This is where the Formax FD 8704CC really finds its mark. This shredder is equipped with paper, optical and magnetic media destruction capabilities. Let me go into more detail.
Before I go into too much detail on how the FD 8704CC’s capabilities shredding material, I would like to cover how many other manufacturers approach multimedia shredding. The ability of a shredder to destroy optical media is often an afterthought with other shredders. All shredding is done via the same slot. That’s not to say they are bad shredders, but the separation of the paper and multimedia material found in the FD 8704CC is by far superior in my personal opinion.
The FD 8704CC has two dedicated shredding slots. One is designed for paper, found in the front, and the other is dedicated for CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, floppy discs, mini DV cassettes and zip discs. Because there are two dedicated slots, each does it’s own proprietary job extremely well. Amazingly, Formax didn’t go chintzy on the paper shredder. It handles up to 45 sheets of paper in a single pass!
The cross cut shredding pattern falls in at a Level 3 and the particle pieces are 5/32″ x 1 5/8″ in size, which is more than what most offices need. The feed slot is 9.4″ wide, so it easily handles letter-size paper and smaller. You can even shred larger paper, it just needs to be folded in half. The shredding blades themselves are made from heat-treated steel. Formax didn’t cut corners on the quality. Even the gears are made from high quality materials.
Have you ever used a shredder and had to turn it off after 20 or 30 minutes to cool down? This is what’s referred to as the duty cycle when it comes to shredders. The Formax FD 8704CC is what’s known as a continuous duty shredder, meaning there is no duty cycle. It uses a thermally protected motor that can be used continuously through the day. This is especially nice in an office where there may be several people using the shredder throughout the day.
If you have ever used an office shredder, you may have discovered that some almost require a degree to use, if not at least a manual. The FD 8704CC is extremely easy to use. It has a control panel with LED lights to let you know what’s going on. It lets you know when the shredder door is open, when the bag is full and when the shredder needs to be oiled. It also includes a photoelectric sensor that automatically turns the shredder on when material is detected. A load control indicator lets you know how hard the motor is working. If the light goes up into the red, it is working too hard. If it is shredding too much, it will shut off, reverse the paper back out and let you adjust the quantity. You could almost say this shredder is jam proof.
Overall I just have to say that this is a solid piece of machinery and an EXCELLENT shredder for the office. I can’t stress enough just how well put together this shredder is. It is ideal for use in a centralized office location. You can find the FD 8704CC here. Still have questions? Give us a call at 1-800-543-5454. You can find our entire selection of paper shredders here.

Crosscut paper shredders, like the Fellowes W-11C, tends to give users that are particularly worried about protecting their information more piece of mind than strip cut shredders. Strip cut shredders slice documents into long strips of paper that can sometimes be pieced back together. Whereas crosscut shredders make cut the documents into undistinguishable bits so there is little chance of this happening.
The Fellowes W-11C crosscut paper shredder is easy to use and requires minimal maintenance. To operate the Fellowes W-11C paper shredder, all the user has to do is feed the sheets of paper into the feed opening at the top. When shopping around for a paper shredder, you probably want the best possible machine for your money. Right? A good solid office shredder should be durable, feature a good shredding capacity and should be able to be used throughout the day without overheating. One shredder that hits all these points and much more is the MBM Destroyit 3104 Level 3 cross cut paper shredder. This is a review.
I would like to start off by going over why a level 3 shredder is so desirable for an office. A security level, in the paper shredder industry, defines how small and secure the cut is. A level 3 particle size is a nice blend of capacity, convenience and security. Level 3 is by far the most common and popular cross cut size for offices. In the case of the 3104 cross cut, it takes paper and turns it into a 3/16″ x 1 1/2″ (4 x 40 mm) particle. Unless you’re shredding top secret documents or classified information, this should be more than enough for your business.
The MBM Destroyit 3104 features a solid build quality. You should be aware that it is both German built and German engineered. Few paper non-Destroyit shredders enjoy the quality that you find in German paper shredders. Let me go over just a few of the “quality” mechanical components you will find in the 3104.
Hardened Cutting Shafts – Many shredders feature standard steel cutting shafts. These “cheaper” shafts get nicked and suffer minor damage when the straggling staple or paper clip makes its way through. The Destroyit 3104 has hardened cutting shafts that can easily handle staples, paper clips, credit cards and CDs. As you might imagine, it also handles paper quite nicely as well.
Chain Drive – A chain drive delivers continuous unrestricted power to the cutting shafts. This results in reliable performance. This also means that you won’t have to worry about stripped-out nylon gears either. The chain drive system ensures durability and longevity.
Dust-Proof Gearbox Housing – As you might imagine, paper shredders create a lot of paper dust. This dust can quickly make its way into gears and other sensitive shredder components. The dust-proof gearbox on the 3104 keeps the gears running nice and clean.
Thermally Protected Motor – Many paper shredders overheat and require a cooldown period. This is not the case with the Destroyit 3104. It uses a specially designed motor that is thermally protected, allowing it to be used continuously without overheating.
12″ Opening – A wide 12″ opening easily accepts letter-size paper, envelopes, computer forms paper, jumbled stacks of paper and much more. The Destroyit 3104’s 12″ opening allows for a lot of play and is very forgiving.
Transparent Safety Shield – The transparent safety shield used on the Destroyit 3104 ensures that only intended materials are being shredded. The Destroyit 3104 is easily one of the safest paper shredders currently on the market.
Wooden Cabinet – Paper shredder can be noisy. A sound-absorbing wood cabinet helps bring down decibel levels and makes in-office paper shredding a far more tolerable experience.
Casters – Included casters make the Destroyit 3104 easy to move around from one location to another.
This is a brief video from MBM on the Destroyit 3104:
Did I mention that this is a high quality shredder? It can easily be placed in a centralized office location for use by multiple people. It also features an extremely easy to use control interface. Sensors and indicator lights let you know what’s going on at all times, keeping you in control of the situation.
I highly recommend this paper shredder. If you have an office and need a reliable paper shredder that will last for years, this is the one you need.
Most offices are busy, bustling places with people shuffling paper from one place to another. In the midst of this chaos, it is easy for paper to become improperly discarded. According to Federal law (FACTA / HIPAA), client, patient and customer information must be shredded when no longer needed. One great way for an office to stay on top of things, and stay compliant, is by using the MBM Destroyit 4002 centralized office shredder. This is a review.
Destroyit (by IDEAL) is distributed in the United States by MBM Corporation. These shredders are German engineered and German built, many say to perfection. Few shredders even comes close in quality or durability. Even Fellowes is now private labeling many Destroyit shredders for their own office line.
The Destroyit 4002 has quickly become a classic and has even developed a cult-like following among paper shredder enthusiasts. This shredder is available in 3 flavors, depending on your personal preference and office needs. This includes a Level 2 strip cut, Level 3 cross cut and Level 4 cross cut. While the shredder blades vary in these different variations, the rest of the shredder remains the same.
About 2 years ago Destroyit implemented a new “Easy Switch” button not to be confused with Staples’ “Easy Button.” This switch is big, round and EXTREMELY easy to use. You push it forward, it turns green and puts the shredder in “automated mode,” which turns the shredder on as paper is detected. Tilt the switch forward again and the shredder turns off. Tilt the switch back and it goes into reverse.
A series of back-lit symbols let you know exactly what is going on with the Destroyit 4002. A capacity gauge lets you know exactly how hard this shredder is working. This is especially nice because you don’t have to count the sheets you are shredding to determine if you are hitting the maximum capacity. This shredder is overall a gem to use.
This is a brief demo of the Destroyit 4002 paper shredder from MBM:
Have you ever used a paper shredder and though you had just turned on a lawn mower? Some shredders are just plain loud. Destroyit has put a lot of effort into making this shredder quiet. This is done in large part to the use of noise-absorbing materials, including a heavy-duty wooden cabinet.
The Destroyit 4002 is designed to be used in an office by multiple people throughout the day. The hardened steel cutting shafts and the thermally protected continuous duty motor keep chomping through paper without overheating or suffering any ill effects. Simply put, this shredder is designed to be used all the time.
Bag changes on this shredder are easy. To begin with, this shredder will let you know when it is full. When it is full, a cabinet door can be opened up, allowing access to the shred bin. The shred bin holds a whopping 44 gallons of paper. Consider the fact that most cars hold 15-30 gallons of fuel. This shredder holds a lot of paper which means a lot fewer bag changes for you.
The Destroyit 4002 is a customer favorite. It has a great track record. It features a sleek design that blends in with just about any office. Let’s see, what else can I say? I recommend this shredder for use in any office. You will probably even have fun using it.
How many of you have purchase a “nice looking” paper shredder for your office only to have it break down a few months later? Pretty frustrating, right? You bet. When you buy a paper shredder, you want it to hold up and last for years. That’s certainly not too much to ask for. If you’re in the market for a high-quality and hassle free paper shredder, consider looking at the MBM Destroyit 2604 cross cut office shredder. This is my review.
Destroyit paper shredders (by IDEAL) are both German engineered and built. It case that doesn’t turn on a light, you may not be aware that German engineered and built office equipment is considered to be some of the best around. Unlike many other office shredder brands made in China, these German shredders are designed from the ground up to last for years.
The Destroyit 2604 cross cut shredder is the perfect size for office departmental use. It measures in at 18 1/2″ x 19 1/2″ x 36 1/2″ and has a nice 26 gallon bin. Cross cut particles compact nicely in a shredder bin, resulting in few bag changes. Twenty-six gallons of paper is a lot of paper. This all makes for a great office shredder.
Available in a Level 3 or Level 4 cross cut pattern, the 2604 provides a great level of shredder security. This shredder is perfect for shredding old contracts, patient data, customer information, receipts and much more. Particles cut on this shredder, simply put, cannot be easily re-assembled.
The Destroyit 2604 rolls out with all the bells and whistles you would expect in a paper shredder of this caliber. This includes a handy bag full indicator, door ajar indicator and the ability to prevent paper jams by gauging the amount of paper being shred.
You can view a video of some of these cool features here:
A meter on the top of the shredder literally lets you know visually how much paper you are shredding. This makes it easier for you by eliminating the need to count the sheets of paper prior to shredding. If too much paper is being fed, the visual lights will let you know and the shredder will back out the paper before a jam can occur. Pretty cool!
Paper shredders, especially cross cut shredders, have a lot of moving parts. This is a necessary evil in order to get the security cut you need for your business documents. This also means that office shredders need to be oiled about every time you empty the shredder bag. Many people, however, forget to do this. An un-oiled shredder can lead to premature wear and tear. The Destroyit 2604 cross cut office shredder includes an automatic oiler. As long as the oil bottle is full, your shredder is getting the oiling it needs.
Energy consumption is another thing we are all more conscious about these days. The MBM Destroyit 2604 is very energy conscious. It utilizes specially designed ESM (Energy Saving Mode) that will put the shredder into an energy-conserving standby mode after 1-hour of inactivity.
As is the case in most offices, paper shredders get used every day. If you have ever used a shredder that requires a “cool down” period, you probably know how annoying that can be. The Destroyit 2604 has a continuous duty motor. That means that the motor is thermally protected, allowing it to be used on a continuous basis without overheating.
This shredder is also extremely quiet, making it ideal for office use. If you’re like me, you don’t want to be distracted in the office by loud machinery. Again, this shredder is perfect for the office.
In conclusion I have to say that the Destroyit 2604 cross cut shredder is probably one of the best shredders around for office use. I highly recommend it.
With so many different shredders to choose from, with so many different brands available, it can be difficult to decide which one works best for you. Whether you’re a government organization, a church, a small or big business, one great model to consider is the Destroyit 3105 paper shredder by MBM. This review will highlight why it is such a great choice.
Manufactured in Germany, Destroyit shredders offer the highest quality available, making them my number one choice among great brands such as HSM, Formax, Dahle, GBC, Fellowes, and Kobra. After selling them for over five years, I can honestly say they have held up better than all of the competition.
One of the best things to look for on a shredder is the continuous motor. The steel blades equipped inside this model allow you to shred huge amounts of paper, staples, paper clips, credit cards, and even CDs, continuously throughout the day. No need to stop and wait for the shredder to cool down.
The Destroyit 3105 comes in Strip Cut and Cross Cut versions. Both have their own strengths, but we’re going to focus on the cross cut today. A level 3 security allows you to shred your sensitive material into tiny bits of confetti. The cross cut shreds 30-32 pages all at once, with a 12″ feed opening, at a fantastic speed of 30 feet per minute.
With a powerful single phase motor, 2 1/8 Horse Power, and the extremely convenient automatic oiler, you can shred all day long without interruption.
Oiling a shredder isn’t the hardest thing to do, but remembering sure can be. Having the automatic oiler makes life so much better in so many ways.
The best part about cross cut shredding, aside from being more secure, is how slow your bag fills up. If you’ve been around shredders, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of having to shove your hand or foot into a strip cut shredder bin so the machine will continue to shred. With an enormous 48 gallon capacity, you’ll be shredding so long before needing to empty the bag that you’ll welcome the change in pace once it finally comes time to do it.
Not only is your mind free from remembering to oil the shredder, it is also at ease with all the safety features offered by this shredder. The clear safety guard prevents things such as ties, hair, and other unwanted material from being shredded. Additionally, it also has an automatic start and stop function, operated by photo cell sensors, jam detection, auto reverse, and an energy saving mode.
Here is an excellent video that shows in greater detail all of the wonderful features the Destroyit 3105 CC has to offer:
Although the Techko SH261PO is a smaller-sized shredder, it’s still rated by the manufacturer to shred 10 sheets of standard 20 lb. paper at a time. However, we recommend backing that off by a few sheets. Its auto-start feature engages the shredder whenever it detects paper. A reverse switch comes in handy when you need to clear out paper jams. This is a cross cut model that shreds papers at security level three.
This highly versatile shredder is also listed in our Home Office Deskside Shredders category. You can read the review here. The Kobra 240 C4 performs works extremely well in both home and office environments.
The HSM 104.3 is designed for continuous use, and it does just that. This is a shredder that handles some of the most difficult shredding jobs. It features several sensors and switches that make operation simple. The HSM 104.3 has an automatic sensor that detects paper and turns the shredder on and off as needed. Another sensor tells you when the shred bin is full. This is a strip cut, security level two shredder.
Keep your sensitive business information safe with the GBC 3890D paper shredder. This cross cut security level five shredder features SmartShred visual indicators that make operation a snap. The model 3890D also has unique Jam-Stopper features that help prevent annoying paper jams.
When it comes to paper shredder reviews, most look about the same. You typically read a report from somebody who hasn’t really tried any of the models.
They often base their report on the most popular models sold. While this information may be helpful, most people looking for a dependable paper shredder want to know more. For example: How long will a specific paper shredder model last me? How much paper can I shred at once? How noisy is it? How often will I have to empty the shredder bag?
We took a different approach with the following paper shredder review. We examined paper shredders that we’ve actually been using in our offices here at Office Zone. We obviously use several paper shredders, but the following three models seem to be the favorites of our office staff (and several of our customers).
Kobra 260 Strip Cut (S4)
Office Zone price: $1,317
Our Kobra 260 sits right next to the printer in our sales department. This machine is about six years old and still runs as well as the first day we go it. It’s built with hardened steel gears and a strong metal chain drive for durable, reliable paper shredding. There are actually four Kobra 260 model versions, two strip cut (S2, S4) and two cross cut (C2, C4). We use the strip cut. Both the S4 and C4 models will shred credit cards and CD’s with ease. This has been a very dependable shredder over the years. The only complaint is the fact that this is a strip-cut model and the shred bag has to be emptied at least once a week.
HSM 411.2 Cross Cut Departmental Paper Shredder
Office Zone price: $3,828
The HSM 411.2 Cross Cut shredder is simply a shredding monster! We’ve enjoyed the use of this shredder for a few years now and it’s amazingly quiet for such a high-capacity, durable shredder. It will quickly shred invoices, receipts and other sensitive information. You can stick 35 sheets of paper in this shredder and it won’t even bog down. This one’s the favorite of our accounting department too. They use the model 411.2 for shredding literally hundreds of invoices a month.
The 411.2 is available in both a cross cut and strip cut design. Ours is cross cut. The steel cutting blades shred through paper clips and staples. Its 41-gallon waste container means changing out the shred bag is a rare occurance.
Formax FD 8400 CC
Office Zone price: $1,614
The Formax 8400 CC paper shredder is also an office favorite. We’ve used and abused ours for about four years. This is a level three security shredder. That means it takes quite a while for these small particles to fill up the shredder’s bin. The Formax models have a cool LED control panel that makes their shredders easy to operate. You can easily shred up to 20 pages at once with the FD 8400 cross cut model.
We can honestly say that all three of these models run smooth and are anything but noisy. Some cross cut shredders are rather loud, but the two models reviewed here operate on the quiet side.
Using paper shredders is a good practice and a good habit to get into. It is no secret that paper shredders are great for destroying sensitive information and protecting one’s identity. That being said, some paper shredders do a better job of shredding paper than others. The biggest difference is the size of the shredded paper after the process is done.
While answering a few questions in Yahoo! Answers the other day, I came across someone asking the question, “Is it OK if I use scissors to cut up credit card applications?” I almost let out a gasp of disbelief. I then went on to post my own answer to the question. It went something like this.
Cutting up a credit card application, or other paper material, with scissors is certainly better than nothing, but will not give you adequate protection from identity theft. Paper cut with scissors is relatively easy to put back together if one has the time. Most criminals won’t bother, but some will.
There are actual documented cases of credit card applications being taped back together, filled out, sent in and accepted! To put it in simple terms, tearing or cutting up sensitive information does not work.
I then went on to explain proper document destruction. Documents that contain any information you don’t want others to see should be shredded, using an electric-powered paper shredder. Not only should you use a paper shredder, but it should also be a cross cut shredder (also known as confetti cut or particle cut shredders).
Strip cut paper shredders just don’t cut it (excuse the pun). Strip cut shredders cut paper into ¼ and sometimes 1/8-inch strips of paper. These strips, although much more difficult than scissor-cut paper, can be re-assembled. Iranian basket weavers proved this after the U.S. embassy was overrun in the 1970s. Secure government documents were re-assembled and ended up being very legible. You can actually read some of these re-assembled documents on Wikipedia.
In a nutshell, cross cut shredders are the only way to go. The blades in the shredder head cut the paper in two different directions, both horizontal and vertical. There is still a wide variety of different cross cut shredders based on the size of the particle. This is usually referred to as the security level of a paper shredder.
I recommend going with a security level of three or higher. Levels five and six are for high security shredding and are usually unnecessary for home or office use. Be aware that the smaller the particle, the fewer sheets that can be shred at any given time due to stress put on the blades and motor.
Paper shredders should be used on a regular basis, whether at home or in the office. Contact Office Zone for more information on paper shredders.
Not all paper shredders are the same. You may have discovered this by personal experience or perhaps you learned this while shopping online. Paper shredders are available in a wide variety of cutting formats. These cutting formats are referred to in the shredder industry as security levels, which were designated by the Deutsche Industrial Norm as DIN 32757.
Many people are aware that there are strip cut and cross cut paper shredders. One cuts the paper into thin strips and the other cuts the paper into “confetti-like” particles. Strip cut paper shredders usually cut paper into 1/4-inch or 1/8-inch strips. Cross cut paper shredders are available in literally dozens of different cutting sizes.
The larger the size, the easier it is to piece a document back together. The U.S. Government learned this the hard way in 1979 after the U.S. embassy was overrun in Iran. The U.S. embassy only used strip cut shredders to shred top security and high security documents. Needless to say, the Iranians were able to put the strip cut documents back together with the help of some experienced basket weavers.
The U.S. Government learned a lesson from that experience. The U.S. Government will now only uses cross cut paper shredders with a security level of 5 or 6. The end result is tiny particles and dust that cannot be reassembled. The higher the security level, the more secure the cut.
There are advantages and disadvantages to using a higher security paper shredder. The higher the security level, the smaller the cut. Although this is nice for security, the shredder blades cannot handle as much paper at a time. Most businesses find a happy medium with a security level 3 or 4. This allows businesses to still get a good secure cut while still being able to shred a lot of paper.
Security level 1 paper shredders are the least secure cut on the DIN 32757 security level scale. These shredders cut paper into 3/8-inch strips (10.5mm) or 3/8-inch x 1-1/2 to 3 1/8-inch (10.5mm x 40-80mm) cross cut particles. This is almost the same security level you would get cutting a document up with scissors. Very few shredders are built to this low a security level anymore.
The highest security level is a level 6. These types of paper shredders cut documents into 1/32-inch by 5/32-inch (1mm x 4-5mm) particles or smaller. Security level 6 is not an officially accepted security level by the Deutsche Industrial Norm DIN 32757 and was created by the U.S. Government.
Using any paper shredder is still better than none, but be sure your paper shredder is a security level 3 or higher to keep your sensitive information safe. For more questions on paper shredders, please contact Office Zone.
