Product Overview:
Have you ever used a paper folding machine that was so loud it sounded like a machine gun firing? That's the case with paper folding machines that use exposed paper folding plates. The best way to help dampen sound is by using an enclosed folding plate system. One company that has managed to do this is Standard Duplicating Machines Corporation with the PF-P3100 paper folder. This commercial folding machine has been around for some time, but is it worth purchasing? Find out more in this review.
Standard Duplicating Machines Corporation, often shortened down to Standard, has been making office machines and paper finishing products for years. They are known for their high-end paper cutting machines, digital duplicators, bindery products and paper folding machines. Their products are considered to be solid machines.
The PF-P3100 is what's often considered to be a semi-automatic folding machine. I'll explain why. Most manual paper folding machines require that the operator manually adjust and tweak the folding plates. The PF-P3100 has enclosed folding plates, which means you cannot gain manual access to them. Setting up the folding plates on this machine is as easy as turning a couple of dials.
Simply indicate on the control panel you want and the PF-P3100 will light up the two alignment points on the folding plates. The LED lights are very easy to see. Turn the top dial to adjust the top plate and the bottom dial to adjust the bottom plate. It is very similar to tuning in an old analog radio using a dial. Once the needle is lined up with the corresponding light, the machine is ready to go. Having used this system myself, I can vouch for the simplicity of it and can attest to the fact that it literally takes seconds to "dial" in a fold.
This machine finds its place sitting on top of a desk or table. It weighs in at 82 pounds, which gives you a pretty good idea on just how hefty and solid this machine is. While it isn't too difficult to maneuver, I recommend having at least two people to pick it up and place it on a desktop or counter.
As I mentioned earlier, the folding plates on this machine are fully enclosed. This dramatically helps to quiet this machine, making it very desirable for an office. Three speed settings are labeled quiet, medium and high. At its fastest, the PF-P3100 can fold paper at a speed of 240 sheets per minute (8 1/2" x 11" paper). At its slowest (quiet speed), it folds 84 sheets per minute (8 1/2" x 11" paper). This is a very ambiance friendly machine.
While this folding machine is easy to set up, and very quiet, it is also packed with a lot of nice features. It can handle paper ranging from 5.5" x 8.5" up to 11" x 17". This makes the PF-P3100 excellent for folding invoices, bills, letters and more. Out of the box, it can be used to create letter folds, z-folds, gate folds, half folds, engineering folds, double parallel folds and more. It can be used with paper ranging in thickness from 16# bond up to 80# text (53-127 gsm).
As is the case with all friction feed machines, glossy, slick and coated paper may result in a jam. I recommend sending in coated, glossy and slick paper in for testing prior to purchasing any paper folding machine.
